Dogs Have Individual Personalities And Are A Lot Smarter Than Most People Think
By Ed Vacin of Discount Clubs Info
My wife and I have three dogs, but today I am only going to talk about one of them. The others, I’ll save for another day. So, without further to do, the first dog we acquired was a puppy, which we named Cimi--short of cinnamon, because she is a cinnamon color. She is half Golden Retriever and half Chow. She is of medium size like a Chow, with a curled up tail, but has the personality of a Retriever. She is so smart that we didn’t have to house-break her, because she house-broke herself. When she got older, we discovered that she understood every word we said. If fact, if we want to say something in front of her that we don’t want her to know, we have to spell it. I’ve heard a lot of similar stories about having to spell things in front of dogs, but the difference with Cimi, is that she learned how to spell some words, like, "W.A.L.K". If we were to say something such as, "It’s time to take you know who for a W.A.L.K", her ears would perk up and she’d starts to whine and run back a forth to the door. She also has strange eating habits. She won’t eat hard dog food, unless she’s starving. The vet said that dogs are genetically programmed to be able to go five days without eating, because when they lived in the wild, they never knew when they’d get their next meal. He said that when they refuse to eat, it’s harder on us than on them, but when they get hungry enough they’ll eat. Anyway, Cimi knows that it really upsets us when she won’t eat, so what she does, is to put her head down to the bowl and pretend to eat. In the end, we finally break down before the five days are up and give her some canned dog food, which she isn’t crazy about, but she will eat it. However, the only kind of canned dog food she will eat is too expensive to give her all the time. So, she finally got "us" trained. We have taken to making her food with turkey roll, rice and vegetables. She loves it, but it’s really a lot of work to maintain. Finally, and strangely enough, she has never liked to play with dog toys or do dog tricks and we were never able to teach her to fetch. When we tried, she would look at us as if to say, "You go fetch. What do you think I am – a dog". That’s right, she thinks she human and so do we.
